Assam CM holds meeting with officials to assess flood preparedness in Guwahati
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting with officials at Janata Bhawan regarding recent flooding incidents in Guwahati.
During the meeting, the officials presented numerous data points, such as rainfall, satellite imagery, and other contributing factors, to the Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Sarma directed officials to implement various mitigation measures.
"We will strengthen the rivulet system around the city, which shall help mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall in short duration," CM Sarma said.
Several parts of the capital city of Assam have witnessed severe flash flood-like situations following heavy rainfall.
Earlier, on Friday, Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal said that, in the last 48 hours, Guwahati has received 167.80mm of rainfall.
"In comparison, we had 171.00 mm of rainfall in the entire month of September. The receding of water was also delayed due to several trees falling in the Bharalu River, which decreased the outflow of rainwater into the river. All department officials are working tirelessly to fight the situation and ensure relief for the citizens of Guwahati," Ashok Singhal had said.
