7 ICE CREAM FLAVOURS We Miss From Our Childhood

Another weekend, another big family brunch at the CauldronSisterss’. This time, our menu had a theme…of all things nostalgic. From that school-inspired tiffin box combination of aloo parantha & aam ka achaar to canteen-wala samosa with a side of mango bite and kismi bar toffees, we made sure a lot of those childhood memories were laid on the table that day. Of course, this was followed by our favourite ice-creams in the end, something we want to talk about in today’s blog. As we, Ratzz & Ritzzy, remembered those lovely days, we realised it was our mother who started building us those ‘sweet’ memories. To reach the autorickshaw stand every time we went to grandmother’s or the market, we had to walk for about ten minutes. Who likes any sort of hard work at that age, but bribed by ice-creams, we girls never minded the task. The legendary Orange Bar had since been a pivotal part of our lives. Sharing an orange bar with a friend while riding bicycles back home was a thing back then as well. Next came those chocolate cones which were considered a luxury. Raise your hand if you, too, happened to quickly finish the cone so you could reach the chocolate piece at the end. As we recall, Toddler-Ratzz once got lucky when her chocolate cone came half-filled with chocolate instead of ice cream. Our friends called it an ‘achievement’ and we couldn’t agree more.

Talking about chocolate, who remembers Chocobar? That darkness on the outside hiding all the sweet goodness inside...nom nom…chocolate and vanilla is one classic combination that has never gone out of fashion to date. Having said that, as kids, we secretly wished this choco bar was filled with chocolate instead of vanilla, making it an even more intense affair for our palates. It wasn’t too long before our prayers were answered and Feast entered the markets. Talking about weekends, when the whole family would go out to eat and end the gala night with either pan or ice cream, the mommies in the group always chose Cassatas and Kulfis. Cassata was our mother’s favourite, which she lovingly shared with us, especially the spongy cake part. Sundays without Sundae? That was never the case. Ritzzy is still a lover of sundaes; one should watch her enjoy the colourful cups topped with tuttifrutti like a child. Pepsicola was another flavour we miss dearly. It wasn’t available in Jaipur at the time, which meant our annual holidays in Mumbai had fixed evening treats – Pepsicola. Long slushy sticks filled with coke-like tidbit…slurp slurp. Psst, ice-creams made life a lot better back then. Long train and car journeys got exciting because of popsicles. Boring weddings where adults socialised, the kids found each other at the ice cream counters. At such gatherings of the 80s and 90s, traditionally, vanilla was served with either chocolate or strawberry flavours. Remember how kids used to come up with their own DIY Sundae cups using those flavours? Ha-ha. Lastly, can we get an Amen for the Raspberry and Mango Dolly? Today, we’ve multiple options to choose from creative artisanal ice cream brands that make decadent flavours. Regardless, we still miss the old days when taste, aroma and sense were simpler and more flavorful. How wonderful that a little scoop of ice cream can trigger so many memories at once. We’d love to hear from you and learn which have been your everlasting ice-cream flavours.
