Will appointment of Vice President or working Prez actually benefit Congress?

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge has taken over as Congress President. On Wednesday, he took the chair in the presence of both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi at party headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, becoming an important part of the history of the 137-year-old Congress party. Now his name is included among political behemoths like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru are named. However, with him becoming the President, the discussion has started whether the party will appoint a Vice President or Working President to aid the 80-year-old Kharge!

Congress has a tradition of both. Rahul Gandhi has worked with Sonia Gandhi as the Vice President. Arjun Singh has been the Vice President of the party in the past as well. Jitendra Prasad has also worked as Vice President. For some time now, the Congress has started the practice of making several working presidents along with the president in the states. However, its advantages or disadvantages have not been assessed. Informed sources in the Congress stress that Kharge will either be accompanied by one or two vice-presidents or at least two working presidents.
