Why is the govt unable to find a new AG?

New Delhi: The central government is once again going to give one year extension to Attorney General KK Venugopal. He is 91 years old and has been wanting to be relieved of this responsibility for more than two years. He was appointed as the country’s highest legal officer - the Attorney General - by the Central Government in 2017. When his term ended in 2020, he had expressed his desire to retire. On the insistence of the central government, he had said that he could take a service extension, that is, in 2021, he had to retire at any cost. But in 2021 also he got extension of service and now in 2022 also he is to be given extension for one year. Think, after coming to power at the Center, the Narendra Modi government made Mukul Rohatgi as Attorney General in 2014, who retired in 2017. But it has been five years since the second attorney general and the government is going to extend his service for one more year. The question is, why is the central government not getting an alternative to KK Venugopal? Is it that the government is not getting any new Attorney General or is it due to the respect accorded to him in the judiciary that the government does not want to remove him? Keep in mind that Venugopal has been practicing law for the last 67 years and there is no one senior to him in the whole country. He is highly respected both because of his ability and age. His presence makes it easier for the government to implement many of its agendas. The second reason is being told that the government is trying to make Harish Salve as Attorney General but it is waiting as he has taken a lot of work abroad. It is being told that it will take a long time to settle his work.
