Pune: Former NCP corporator shot dead by unidentified assailants
Pune: Former Corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation, Vanraj Andekar was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Sunday night at Imaandar Chowk area of the city, police said.
According to the police, Andekar who belonged to the former Nationalist Congress Party (undivided) was attacked with a sharp weapon before the assailants opened fire at him.
Sharing details of the incident Joint Commissioner of Police, Pune, Ranjan Kumar Sharma said, "Around 9:30 pm Vanraj Andekar (Former Corporator of Ajit Pawar's NCP faction) was standing with his cousin at Imaandar Chowk. Some people came and attacked them. During this attack, five rounds were fired, as per the information received at first sight and they were also attacked with sharp weapons."
Andekar was rushed to King Edward Memorial Hospital where he was declared brought dead. His body was sent to Sassoon Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Some known people whose names have appeared in this are being questioned, the DCP said, adding that the death was due to a sharp weapon.
"Our crime branch and other zone teams are working on this. They are engaged in finding the accused and arresting them. Till now it is not clear who the accused are and why they attacked them. Some known people whose names have appeared in this are being questioned...Death was due to a sharp weapon...," the police official said.
