Need to save wild buffaloes in nat’l parks

Kaziranga (Assam): The Kaziranga National Park of Assam is famous not only for the one-horned rhinoceros but also for the ‘Big Five’, which includes elephants, tigers, barashinghas and wild buffalos apart from rhinos. After efforts were made to save the rhinos, their number has increased to more than 3000. The number of tigers in Kaziranga is 104 and wild buffaloes are about 1000. There are sufficient wild buffaloes in Kaziranga but in other states of the country their number is less than 10 and in Chhattisgarh they have become extinct.

Efforts are being made to conserve wild buffaloes. Many times wild animals are killed while crossing the road in Kaziranga National Park which is spread on both sides of National Highway 37. To save the wild animals, a 36-kilometre long flyover is being constructed. This flyover will be the longest in the country. Its construction will start after NGT approval.
