MP: Family of ASI Mahendra Bagri, killed by sand mafia, to get assistance amount of Rs 1 crore, state govt to send proposal to EC for approval

Bhopal: An assistance amount of Rs 1 crore will be provided to the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mahendra Bagri, who was killed after being crushed with a tractor by the sand mafia in Shahdol on Saturday night, said Chief Minister Office (CMO).
The statement further read that a proposal for the same would be sent to the Election Commission for approval.
"An assistance amount of Rs 1 crore will be provided to the family of ASI Mahendra Bagri who was killed by a sand mafia with a tractor. The state government will send the proposal to the Election Commission for approval," CMO said in the statement.
Earlier on Sunday, two people allegedly involved in the illegal sand mining industry were arrested after ramming their vehicle into a police officer in the Naudhiya area of Shahdol district, an official said.
According to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Shahdol, DC Sagar, Assistant Sub-Inspector Bagri had been on duty, seeking to apprehend a suspect with an active warrant on Saturday night. As the officers were on their way, a tractor-trailer approached at high speed and was driving recklessly.
The ASI came out of the vehicle to signal the oncoming tractor-trailer to stop, but the vehicle did not slow down and, allegedly, rammed ASI Bagri, leading to his death.
"The tractor, which had a trailer attached to it, hit the ASI and ran him over. Afterwards, the vehicle lost control, collided with a culvert, causing the trailer to fall beneath it, and got stuck with its tyre in the culvert," Sagar said.
Sagar added that the tractor driver was arrested and an inquiry was going on.
"Our probe has revealed that the son of the owner of the tractor was also involved in it. He has also been arrested. The owner is currently on the run and there's a cash reward of Rs 30,000 for his capture," Sagar said.
An FIR was registered under IPC sections 302/34 (murder), 414 (assisting in the concealment of stolen property), 379 (theft), and various provisions related to illegal mining, said Sagar.
